Heritage Hall History

A Theatrical Renaissance

For nearly four decades, the echo of live performances had faded in Mountain City, Tennessee. The once vibrant “old high school auditorium,” now Heritage Hall, was a hub of community events until 1966. However, it had become a silent relic. The opening of a new high school without an auditorium left a void in Johnson County’s cultural scene, consequently relegating live entertainment to the humble settings of church halls and school gymnasiums.

Nevertheless, the stage was set for a dramatic transformation when Evelyn Cook, a passionate former drama teacher, envisioned a revival of the arts. She, along with a dedicated group of visionaries, saw potential where others saw a storage room. They imagined the stored lockers and desks replaced with plush seats, elegant curtains, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Their dream was to resurrect the auditorium as a beacon of performance art in a community starved for a stage.

Through seven years of tireless fundraising, meticulous planning, and community labor, the dream materialized. The 1923-era auditorium, on the brink of being forgotten, was rejuvenated from the ground up. Finally, in September 2005, the curtains rose again, revealing the Heritage Hall Theatre—a cozy, inviting space that beckoned the community back to the arts.
